Overview of the programme
updated in January 2014 At Wurzl14 there will be five days on which you participate in the camp programme. The GuSp (10 to 13 year old girl guides and boy scouts) spend two of these days together: the adventure day and the GWB day. As its name implies, the adventure day is supposed to be an adventure. We are going to help the good ones, fight villains and explore the myths of Gastein. At night we want to play a big adventure game together. The GWB (Georgswettbewerb) is a traditional scouts competition in Salzburg. All GuSp patrols run against each other and can show how fit they are when it comes to scouting techniques. Of course there will be a ceremony in the end in which the best patrols get a prize. On two days you can choose workshops in advance. We can offer you the following workshops:
- Natural cosmetics and spa: Together you will make a campfire, cook with natural ingredients and create natural cosmetic like face packs, creams and ointments.
- Building a clay oven: You will build our own oven made of clay and bricks and bake pizza in it. After you`ve finished, you can take the oven back to your place, where you can use it throughout the rest of the camp.
- Making chocolate: Anything is good if it’s made of chocolate – a workshop for sweet teeth. You will create several truffles and chocolate. Of course there will be a tasting afterwards.
- Natural jewellery and felting: Be your own designer: Jewellery and accessories you have always dreamed of – no problem with a little bit of imagination and everything nature has to offer. Create your own jewellery collection.
- The life of bees: Everyone knows honey, but do you know where it comes from? If you’re not afraid of the inside of a bee hive and want to learn more about the by-products of bee-keeping like wax, propolis and pollen, this workshop is just right for you.
- Hiking: Our team has prepared routes at different levels for you. Equipped with a map and a compass or GPS, it will be easy for you to find the way and in small groups enjoy the great view of Gastein from high above. Of course a leader will accompany you to offer help if needed.
- Games, sports and fun: You want to let off the steam? Then you’re invited to join this sporty workshop, play different ball games like dodgeball, volleyball or football, participate in a relay, a sack race and a number of further activities and show how much energy you have.
- Building and cracking a whip: Whipcracking has a long tradition in the Austrian mountain region. In this workshop you can build your own whip and learn how to crack it. But be warned – there will be an awful lot of noise.
- Making camp fires and cooking with natural ingredients: Making a campfire is just part of being a scout. All the more important to know how to make one quickly even under aggravated circumstances. In this workshop you will get to know different kinds of fires, learn how to prepare a fireplace, which material to use in order to make a good fire and how to make a fire when the weather is bad. Finally, you will cook your own meal above the fire.
- Making soap: In this workshop you will be shown how to make soap yourself. You will create different forms, different odours, different colours and styles. All you need is to be creative.
- Experience the forest: Accompanied by a ranger you will discover the forest, find out about its function and get to know the animals that live in our woods (which you can observe at the face). Playing games in the forest will not come off badly.
- Food at close range: For our congenial neighbours from Bavaria the veal sausage belongs to basic foods. Austrians, if they are not by chance vegetarians, equally love it. A restaurant owner in Bad Hofgastein can show you how to make this specialty. You will make your own sausage and taste it. Afterwards you will visit farmer Maria, who is responsible for the school milk in her village. She tell you about her work and offer you the possibility to mix your own milkshakes.
- Journalism: Get to know the camp from a completely new angle. Guided by the team that designs our camp paper you can discover the camp as a reporter for one day, conduct interviews, write short reports and help design the paper. And who knows: Maybe you will reveal a sensation.
- Buliding a water wheel: Under expert guidance, you will build your own water wheel linked to a generator at a creek near the campsite. With the electricity you produce, you can make light or recharge your mobile phones. A workshop for techies and adventures.
- Floristry: A workshop for nature lovers with a sense of creativity. An apprenticed florist will show you how to make beautiful bouquets and arrangements with flowers you’ve picked at the meadows around the campsite.
- Paper manufacturing: You like to write letters and have always been looking for remarkable stationery? Or you’re simply interested in how paper is made and can be recycled? Then this is the right workshop for you, where you can produce paper yourself.
We are also trying to organize trips to High Tauern National Park, the waterfalls in Krimml or the city centre of Salzburg (including a guided city tour if you wish). On the fifth day you are going to attend to different tasks and play games (some of them together, some of them against each other) in small, mixed teams of GuSp, CaEx and RaRo (10 to 13, 13 to 16 and 16 to 20 year old girl guides and boy scouts). At the end of the day there will be a culinary surprise.
